Power Retail - FourSquare Special

Social networking site FourSquare has signed up 10 million users and recorded 750 million check-ins in a nod to the growing impact of location-based services.

At just two years old, location-based social networking website FourSquare has reached a major milestone, registering its 10 millionth user account. The company will clock up 750 million check-ins later this week with its users currently averaging around 3 million check-ins a day. FourSquare’s users are split 50-50 between international and the US and the company has recorded 358 million global check-ins since launch.

At present, nearly half a million brands are employing FourSquare to connect with users – the application has played a central role in loyalty campaigns by Dominos, Starbucks and Starwood Resorts. FourSquare is also tipped to be raising is another round of funding and is presently valued at about US$1 billion.

A recent report by eMarketer projects that the number of mobile social networks will double between 2010 and 2015, and the takeup of location-based services will surge in line with this.
