Social commerce meets high fashion with the launch of Derek Lam’s new crowdsourced collection in partnership with online marketplace eBay.

Fashion designer Derek Lam has teamed up with online auctions giant eBay to launch the world’s first crowdsourced fashion collection. The collection is now available exclusively at the designer’s eBay store.

Lam debuted the 16-piece Spring/Summer dress collection during New York Fashion Week in February, in tandem with a launch at dereklam.ebay.com. He then invited shoppers everywhere to vote for the pieces they most coveted to finalise the collection. The project saw over 120,000 votes cast by the international eBay community, both online and via mobile devices, with five designs created based on the collective tastes of shoppers.

“eBay created an incredibly unique opportunity to have a direct dialogue with shoppers around the world – and the community interest in helping influence the DEREK LAM + eBay collection has been phenomenal,” said Lam.

Crowdsourcing is fast gaining steam as a social commerce mechanism, especially among the fashion set. Its ability to stimulate brand awareness while engaging shoppers in dialogue has seen it adopted by retailers such as ModClothand Threadless.

“DEREK LAM + eBay represents the new frontier of social commerce, and we are thrilled to collaborate and connect our shoppers with a designer as talented as Derek,” said Miriam Lahage, Vice President and General Manager of eBay Fashion.
